Remembering our alumni pioneers

Dr Hiralal Patel (1919-2021)

Dr Hiralal ‘Hiru’ Patel left India at 18 in 1938 to study Mechanical Engineering at Imperial, later completing a PhD in Aeronautics. His thesis advanced the understanding of flutter, a complex aerodynamic phenomenon.

After his studies, Hiru returned to India, where he became a pioneer in the plastics industry. In 2023, Imperial opened the Hiru N Patel Supersonic Wind Tunnel, made possible by a generous gift from his family, enabling cutting-edge research in high-speed airflow.

"My father’s love for Imperial was so strong that honouring his memory with this project would have meant a lot to him. He would have been thrilled to be a part of new scientific discoveries in this wind tunnel going forward." - Sanjay Patel

Narinder Singh Kapany (1926–2020)

Narinder Singh Kapany (Physics 1952, PhD 1955) is widely recognised as the "Father of Fibre Optics".

He was interested in optics from a young age, ever since his father gifted him a camera which sparked a desire to understand its inner workings.

During his PhD he pioneered the use of fibre optics to transmit high-quality images, and his work laid the foundations for many areas of technology and medicine that are widespread today, including high-speed internet technology, pulse oximetry, distance-measuring equipment and laser-eye surgery.

Following his PhD, Dr Kapany moved to the United States but continued his association with Imperial for many years, including as a member of Imperial’s Development Advisory Board in the early 2000s.
