Imperial's QuEST centre translates discoveries in quantum science into transformative quantum technologies

An image of facilities

Quantum Navigators and Metrology: Accelerometers are a critical tool for satellite-free navigation. We are developing ultracold atom interferometers and high-precision mechanical oscillators for use as accelerometers in navigation systems.

Sensors and Imaging

Sensors and Imaging: We develop quantum sensors to accurately measure weak fields for applications in biology, security & defence and engineering.

Communications

Communications and networks: Full-scale quantum advantages will be achieved by networking individual devices and processors. This challenging task involves developments in efficient quantum memories, quantum repeaters and secure quantum communication channels.

Two researchers working in the physics labs

Computation and simulations: Quantum computing lies at the heart of quantum technologies. Our researchers are working together to develop new algorithms for real world applications in finance, engineering and various optimisation tasks.

Professor Fay Dowker

Foundations and Information Science: Quantum mechanics is at the heart of modern science as it enables us to understand nature from first principles.

Quantum tests of fundamental physics: how Imperial is using quantum techniques to make progress on some of the important open questions in fundamental physics and cosmology.

Quantum research themes

Materials for Quantum Technologies

Like all technologies, new quantum devices rely critically upon materials, both at the heart of the quantum system and also in the surrounding infrastructure required to meet the often demanding environmental requirements.

Quantum Internet

A quantum internet is envisioned as a general, scalable network that enables two or more quantum devices to share entanglement. This will enable secure communication, enhanced precision timing, scalable quantum computing and distributed sensing.
